Société Générale develops "Positive Impact Finance" solutions for emerging cities. It supports urban projects aligned with the SDGs through expertise (SRI/ESG consulting, market access). It develops financing solutions (bond issuances and loans) in partnership with development finance institutions to mitigate the credit risk of municipalities. In 2020, the bank invested EUR 10.9 billion to finance infrastructure in Africa. It participates in capacity building programmes for African executives to finance sustainable infrastructure projects.
Société Générale is also involved in several international initiatives, including UNEP-FI's Positive Impact Finance and the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA). It has engaged in a collaboration with FMDV on project preparation and the development of innovative financial models for African cities.
